Historical Evidence of the Padmashali Community’s Existence

• In the town of Puri, Odisha, there is a temple dedicated to Markandeya and a sacred bathing tank. Devotees take a ritual bath in this tank before visiting the deity.

• In Himachal Pradesh, on the Khasg-2 and Brahma Pukar road, there is a temple dedicated to Markandeya. It is believed that Markandeya was born here. Every year, a celebration takes place on the full moon day of Vaishakha. Devotees believe that those without children will be blessed with offspring if they visit this temple and offer their prayers.

• In the dense forests of the Kollar district of Karnataka, in a mountainous region known as Okkaleri, lies a temple dedicated to Markandeya. There is a large lake here, also named Markandeya, which is believed to have been the site of Markandeya’s penance. Devotees believe that Yama, the god of death, used his noose here, and an idol of Markandeya in the temple depicts him being bound by Yama’s noose.

• Near the town of Gotak in Belgaum district, Karnataka, two rivers flow, one named Ghataprabh and the other named Markandeya. The Karnataka government is currently constructing a dam named after Markandeya on the Ghataprabh river to provide irrigation and drinking water.

• In Uttarakhand, a picturesque region called Bontoli is home to two rivers: the Mad Maheshwar and the Markandeya Ganga. It has been a long-standing tradition to bathe in the Markandeya Ganga and offer prayers to Markandeya.

The town of Baruch, which lies on the railway route from Surat to Ahmedabad, near the Narmada River, was once the residence of Sage Bhṛgu. The town has a history of over 2000 years. The temple dedicated to the founder of the Padmashali community, Bhṛgu Maharshi, is located here and is known as “Bhṛgukavacha.” Over time, the name “Bhṛgukavacha” evolved into “Baruch.” This historical fact confirms that Sage Bhṛgu resided here.
