Perseverance and Self-Determination: Mr. A.V. Narayana, IPS

Mr. Aleti Venkata Narayana Padmashali (A.V. Narayana) was born into a humble weaving family. Through sheer determination and hard work, he showcased his talent, pursued higher education, and rose to the esteemed rank of an IPS officer—an achievement that brings pride to the entire Padmashali community.

He completed his PUC studies in his hometown, always excelling academically. His parents, Kotayya and Adiseshamma, supported him despite their weaving background, and from the very beginning, he consistently ranked first in school. He went on to earn a B.Sc. at A.E. Science College while attending evening classes. Following this, he worked for six years at the Reserve Bank of India.

In 1976, he passed the Group-1 exams and was selected as DSP through open competition. Despite the opportunity to secure a reserved seat as a BC candidate—which would have guaranteed him a posting as RDO—he chose the open competition route. By doing so, he gave another BC candidate the reserved opportunity, demonstrating both integrity and humanity.

He earned his IPS position as part of the 1987 batch. From 1992 to 2008, he served in various capacities ranging from SP to IG, earning the respect and admiration of senior officials through his honesty and dedication.

During his career, he served in several districts, including Srikakulam, Proddatur, Gudur, Karimnagar, Hyderabad, and Khammam. Highlights of his service include:

  • SP of Khammam District
  • DIG of Kurnool Battalion
  • DIG of Anantapur Range
  • Excise Director
  • IG of CID (2007)

He retired in April 2008, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and exemplary service.

His family also continues his tradition of excellence. His son, Anil Kumar, is an IIT graduate now based in the United States. His daughter, P. Madhavi, works as an IAS Officer in the Accountant General’s office, and another daughter, A. Shireesh, is a doctor in the United States.
