The Necessity of the “Padmashali” Surname

The Necessity of the “Padmashali” Surname

“Padmashali” is not just a caste; it is a lineage. According to ancient texts, Padmashalis are descendants of those who were praised by the gods as protectors of humanity, weaving garments through the art of Padmatantul. The history of the Padmashali community is rooted in this legacy. The handloom craft has been passed down through generations, and those known as Padmashalis today were once honored as descendants of sages in ancient times.

With a rich and glorious history, the Padmashali community has every right to celebrate their lineage and honor their heritage. Recognizing this, the elders of the community suggest that Padmashali families include the term “Padmashali” at the end of their names, both as a title and as a mark of respect, to showcase their greatness. This has been encouraged as a way for individuals to proudly represent their heritage. It is hoped that every member of the community will respond positively to this call.

Some scholars, however, suggest using the title “Neta” at the end of the name instead, and this is a practice that some have begun to follow. There is still ongoing discussion about which title will become more widely used.

Beyond just adopting a name, it is essential for Padmashalis to uphold the values of their sage heritage by strictly following traditional practices. This includes the regular observance of rituals like the chanting of Gayatri Mantra, the application of Vibhuti (holy ash), and the wearing of Kumkum. These practices should be seen as their duty.

The core message here is that Padmashali’s, proud of their sage lineage, should live in a way that reflects their cultural and spiritual heritage.
